Sucked into Books

Well...here: Sucked into books. I said I would, so, without further ado...

We've all had that one book, trilogy, series that we have been sucked into. Actually, let me change that,  not one but many. For me, it's the Harry Potter series, Percy Jackson books (both series), Hunger Games, Divergent Trilogy and currently Pretty Little Liars.

What's so special about these books you ask? Well, the thing is, we get sucked into them. Think of them as a vacuum. All our unwanted emotions, experiences etc are all drowned in these books. They transport us to another world. Of course you already knew that. I'm here to discuss how I feel about it, personally and what my theory is about why this happens (hahaha, I'm going all sciency these days).

When I am sucked into this world, all I want to do is race through the moments, but I stop myself. What's the fun in skipping all the fun? I try to make the most of the book, indulging myself in the lines while I absorb them. The temptation of speeding still nagging me. I wish I could say that I have mastered this, but I can't. Great things need time.

I feel like I am next to the characters, seeing what they see, feeling what they feel, acting like they would. This connection that we have, this side by side, enables us to get attached to the book. Never wanting to leave it's side. If we enjoy the book, we can use our experiences, our little everyday like experiences, to sympathise with the characters who have bigger issues from our experiences.

We also tend to use our personal turn ons/ offs, our feelings, for example, in Divergent, the brother tries to kill his own sister. Me, being me am like: "Why are you her brother if you choose to kill her?" The brother makes up some excuse later about manipulation but for me, I don't believe it.

Anyways, my main point is, we get so indulged in books, because we try our best to feel like the characters, and sympathise. For those of you who don't like reading it's because you have to read a book about someone who's close to your age, and you will be able to understand the connection. Try it.

Soon, you will be lost in this world and breaking down when the characters break down. Refer to the Book Thief article for more on that.
